TBH what bothers me the most about this discourse is that it feels really personal. As in, it feels like people who are complaining about how fandom wank is worse now are basically saying that it's worse because people are worse. I don't think most people are approaching it in terms of thinking about how the structures of social media websites affect discourse. It's just "fandom is bad now because everyone younger than me is an asshole". and that pisses me off.

While cranks have been around forever, current social media gives them anonymity without consequences, the ability to organize for the purpose of harassment and brigading, and find targets to attack.
