Diverse Films

I'm a cis white bisexual woman, and I want to consume more diverse media. I want to learn more about white privilege, as well as learn more about the LGBTQIA+ community that I'm a part of. I also want to see things written/directed/produced by women and people of color and LGBTQIA+ people! I just don't know where to start. Thank you for your help and suggestions! :)

If you see movies that star POC, watch them. I mean...that's a start. You can check out Moonlight, Pariah, Girlhood, The Handmaiden, Girls Trip and a lot of otheres.

Here's a good curation of women directors: http://fuckyeahwomenfilmdirectors.tumblr.com/
Black film: http://blackfilm.tumblr.com/

I follow another one with african film but I don't quite recall the name right now

This person mentions a lot of diverse films: http://screendomcome.tumblr.com/

Of course that's if you have a tumblr.

If you have netflix, definitely check the international section.

You could also look at Beasts of No Nation, Persepolis, Sita Sings the Blues, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Selma, 13th, Half of a Yellow Sun, Boy, Hunt For the Wilderpeople.

Books I've enjoyed recently:

Passing Strange by Ellen Klages -- lesbian romance in a very light scifi version of the 1940s.
Roller Girl by Vanessa North -- lesbian contemporary romance where on the protagonists is a trans woman.

And this is a short story:
Hunting Monsters by S.L. Huang

For television shows, definitely look at things that came out in the 90's and early 00's. Plenty are on youtube, like (These are all American so,) Taina*, Moesha, The Brothers Garcia*, Fresh Prince, Family Matters, In The House*, Happily Ever After: Tales for Every Child* .

* Last time I checked they were on youtube.

As for books, I LOVE Crazy Rich Asians and a movie is coming soon.

Moonlight and Appropriate Behaviour come immediately to mind. Jill Soloway might be worth looking into as well.

I liked Saving Face - romantic comedy coming of age coming out comedy-of-manners set in the Chinese community of New York: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0384504/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

(I, also, developed a massive crush on the ballerina.)

One of my favorites. It was so awkward to watch with my Asian mom though, lol.

I recently discovered the actress who played Vivian is now doing foodie videos for Buzzfeed.

I always recommend Journeyman, if you can find it (A reporter in San Francisco is thrown about time to help people fix their pasts without messing up his own presnt). It's remarkably thin on the LGBT front but had some great women behind it gave Moon Bloodgood and Gretchen Egolf some really interesting things go work with.

I hate trying to link from my phone (this post took so long to type) but I've got a journeyman tag with episode reviews and BTS background at theleisuretimeblog.wordpress.com.

Not a movie but two very short seasons of a comedy series: Chewing Gum (its on Netflix) It's created Michaela Coel who also plays the main character, and while it's mostly about her attempts to start having (het) sex it has queer side characters and commentary on race and privilege. Really fun, really NSFW!
