Or maybe you're just wrong OP. I was on a fandom message board as recently as two years ago and it was a million times better than the same fandom on Tumblr.

Though yes, I am old. So I can compare fandom on Usenet(!), private message boards, Tumblr, Reddit, LJ, and IMDB boards. And I can tell you for a fact that private message boards are the best. The are the most flexible, easiest to use, most user-friendly, and easiest to get to know other members of your fandom, and easiest to block things you don't want to see.

IMDB boards were second best, LJ third, Usenet fourth, Reddit fifth, and Tumblr is dead last. It's the worst platform in every way. It has almost no redeeming value.

I think it's very telling that while things are being reblogged on Tumblr and retweeted on Twitter (like fanart and the like), fandoms are now moving on to places like Discord to actually talk to each other. Tumblr is not about community. It barely even functions for fic writers in fandom. That's why we still need AO3. It's just for reblogging memes, fanart, and micro-information.

And callouts.

And "imagine if..." posts that would actually make interesting fic, but why write anything when you can just ~imagine~?

I'm sorry but IMDB was a pit of snakes.

Not my experience at all. The board for the actor I was a fan of was fantastic. People were awesome, there no fighting, no trolling, nothing like that.

The only reason why I put it behind private boards is because of a lack of functionality and organization.

Fair enough, glad you had a good experience. In my day it was mostly known for being antagonistic and sexist.

This goes back to 2005 so maybe things were different then? I started on my next big fandom in 2010 - and it was a cesspit. I'm still there, and it still is, though slightly less than it used to be. People have grown up a bit.

Really, until this fandom I never had a bad experience, so when people say "fandom was always terrible" I can't understand where they're coming from.

No, things weren't different then. You just happened to be lucky enough to find a corner of it that wasn't a festering pit of assholes right out of the gate.
