That's part of the problem. They made spaces that are very difficult to moderate at all, and that's where a lot of the problems stem from imo. While it's true you can have shitty moderators that ruin stuff, I still think that moderated comms make for a much more stable experience.

I agree, the mantra has been "tagging is a better ontology than categories, folders, or communities." That's entirely my generation's fault. You end up putting people who hate MLP with people who love MLP. It's great for libraries where you want random access, but terrible for building communities.

Of course, there I go with "my generation's fault." Generally I have the opinion that intergenerational wank is a media distraction from real problems of class, race/ethnicity, and gender.

See, I think that tagging is great - but the groundwork should still be the stark difference between moderated communities and personal blogs. I think it makes for a much clearer fandom experience, a more organized one overall, and that way you can curate the community spaces in a positive way.

Generally I have the opinion that intergenerational wank is a media distraction from real problems of class, race/ethnicity, and gender.

I kinda agree. I think a lot of things nowadays are distractions to keep people from really doing what needs to be done. Look at all the "awareness raising" that goes on...
