How do you pronounce the word "bury"?

(Anonymous) 2017-08-31 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
So, I have a new coworker who pronounces it like it's spelled, like "burr-y", while every single other person I've ever known in my entire life pronounces it more like "berry". I've never really thought about it before, but now I'm wondering if maybe it's a regional thing, because he's from a different part of the country.

How do you guys pronounce it?

Berry. Never knew people pronounced it any other way! I used to look after someone who pronounced "vase" as "vorse" and it confused me so much.

I've never heard that one before, that's definitely...different.

Yeah, it threw me for a loop. She said it was for flowers and I was like "Oh, a vase, right" and she sort of sighed and went "No, a vorse."

Weird.

I talked to a guy today who pronounced restaurant like "rest-rent".

People and their pronunciations can be just...odd.

I keep repeating "rest-rent" in my head now and it just sounds worse every time.

Sounds kinda like the British pronunciation: vars.

I'm a Brit myself so I always say "vars," then she ran up to me saying "I've got some flowers and I need a vorse do you have any vorses anywhere" and I just stared at her for the longest time.

More of a hard 's', so like "wars" or "clause." Yeah, it was pretty weird. Never met anyone else who said it like that, haha.

Berry. Unless it's the end of a word, like Sainsbury. Then I pronounce it like "bree"
Ie, Sainsbury = Sainsbree.

It's a verbal tic I've picked up from my mom. Hell if I know.

Burr-y.

Berry, but burry sounds okay too.

Yeah, there are regional differences. But sometimes region has nothing to do with it. My sister pronounce milk as melk and cannot pronounce it with the short i sound.

Yeah, some people have their own pronunciation quirks or whatever you want to call it with certain words.

My mom pronounces woman as woe-man, saliva as sa-lava, and inexplicably adds a T sound onto the end of surgeon.

If I'm just saying it, I think I usually say berry. But if I'm reading it from a page, I usually say bury. I'm from western Canada.
