Re: Fandom Secrets you're too lazy to make!

I've been trying to become more active in the J/7 portion of Voyager fandom again after a long hiatus, but I'm starting to notice that the other people who are currently active are very, very different from the ones I knew back in the day. They seem to not only worship the ground that Kate Mulgrew walks on and go out of their way to excuse every mistake she's ever made, but they also have a massive hate-on for Jeri Ryan and a tendency to condescendingly attack anyone who says anything positive about her. God FORBID you ever criticize Kate under any circumstances, though. It's kind of uncomfortable for me because, although I do like Mulgrew a lot, I've always been more of a Jeri fan. Back when I was first involved in this fandom, this wasn't considered a controversial opinion in the least, and while we certainly had our fair share of toxic asshats and stupid wankery, we didn't attack each other over liking one actress over another or worse, for identifying as anything other than a stone butch "gold star" lesbian. On that note, I've noticed that a worrying number of the J/7 fan community seems to be of the opinion that trans men are gender traitors and trans women are just men trying to appropriate female culture, and that doesn't sit well with me at all. I've quietly unfollowed some of them on tumblr for this, but now I'm nervous about posting on the new J/7 forum because they're the mods there.

Tl;dr: I want to be a part of J/7 fandom again, but it's changed so much (and not for the better, in my opinion) that I don't feel welcome. And frankly, with everything else going on, the last thing I need right now is to be involved in fandom drama...

:(

I'm sorry. That sounds really toxic and uncomfortable to be around, especially when all you want to do is share some love for your favorite characters/pairing.

If you know the likely triggers you can probably avoid drama. But I've found self-censoring over stuff in a way that truly bothers you leads to a resentful fandom experience.

Like it's one thing to 'self-censor' and not talk about Star Trek on a Star Wars forum. It's another to be afraid to be afraid to mention liking any Ferangi character for fear of getting banned for inciting anti-semitic wank. Or sexism wank.
