Ferris Bueller is supposed to be the Manic Pixy Dream Asshole for Cameron and Jeanie, but unfortunately he ends up upstaging both, and Cameron's problems can't be resolved anyway because like every other dumb fucking 80s teen movie, it's a fantasy paradox where parents are both the biggest problem but almost completely absent. So the primary conflict ends up Cameron vs. Car.

I think the only bright light in the "escape from suburbia" genre is Desperately Seeking Susan, largely because Roberta's emotional life as the trophy bride of a hot tub salesman really does suck, and the people in the city actually have lives there beyond being gawped at by suburban teens looking for their missing soul.

Of course it ends up Cameron vs. Car because Manic Pixy Dream Asshole's superpower is to inexplicably evade any consequences for his actions, which ends up ruining the movie the more you think about it.
