Shipping Variety

Are there any ships you read fic for where all the fic starts to read the same? Always following the same beats and always emphasizing and downplaying the same traits in the characters?

If so, does that impact your interest in the ship?

Which of your ships would you say has the most variety in terms of the fan work created?

What are some fandoms or ships where you'd like to see more variety in the fan work?

In general, M/M in which a headstrong rival becomes a lover often seems similar to me. (I've been told this is a "Naruto/Sasuke" relationship.)

Been reading a lot of Enterprise fic lately, and Trip/Malcolm seems all pretty similar.

Also, a pox on that one person who keeps having everyone call Malcolm Reed "Mal." It's not his name, it's never been used as his name that I'm aware. STOP DOING IT.

Melkor/Sauron is extremely varied in how it is written because people see the characters so differently. There is everything from abuse to fluffy romance. I want to see more top!Sauron, but other than that I'm satisfied with the variety.

I got out of shipping Spuffy because everything was the same and not remotely how I interpreted them. I wanted dom!Buffy and sub!Spike, but it was almost always the reverse or at least the cliched man leads during sex scenes. It was just so off from how I see the characters, particularly Spike, that it didn't work for me. Now if I'm in a Buffy mood I read Spangel because at least there I can get my sub!Spike.

Back when I read more Hellsing fic it annoyed me that Integra was always ice-cold and dominated Seras completely.

I don't know if I could see Integra as a sub but at least have something where she's showing some emotion and not ordering Seras around.

I think it did have an impact on my interest in the ship because I got tired of reading that. (Not that there was ever enough Integra/Seras fic but that is another matter.)

There's a very strong element of fanon when it comes to Johnlock fanfic - especially where the characterizations are concerned. But lucky for me, I happen to love almost all the popular Johnlock fanon. Hence, they're still my OTP after all these years, even when the series itself has been shit since 2014. :P

In Johnlock fanfic's defense, though, the variety of fanfic plots is huge.

I think a lot of Dinesh/Gilfoyle fic is very samey. Sometimes I just want to read about Dinesh being in love with Gilfoyle without it being a given that Gilfoyle loved him first and has been pining for him the whole time.

A lot of Stucky reads exactly the same. Like, there's a few different varieties but nearly every fic falls into the same handful of categories. (Queer Awareness Stucky, roadtrip with the Winter Soldier Stucky, 1940s angst Stucky, etc.) It makes it frustrating to find fic.

The most variety would probably go to Thorki. Not only are there different characterizations that authors draw from (comics, MCU, etc.) but there's also a lot of AUs and canon!AUs and many of the BNFs are very experimental.

I'd love to see more variety in Elder Scrolls fics, especially Skyrim stuff. There's lots and lots of Hot NPCxF!Dovahkiin self-inserty kind of stuff, and then a small portion of interesting and awesome fic.

Thorin/Bilbo was very like that.

I feel a lot of the Dragon Age pairings are like that because people follow the plot of the romances in the games.

A lot that end up like that have a canon plot that Fandom slavishly follows to a painful extent.
