I had a teacher who asked what we thought Lord of the Flies would be like if the stranded kids had been girls. A bunch of them said no one would've gotten killed because girls are nicer, which made me wonder where they had been in middle school during the fights. Girls can be really brutal towards each other.

Actually I could agree with the argument that no one would have been killed. Probably more suicides though, due to being isolated, torn down, excluded and verbally harassed.

I have no doubt there would be gruesome murder among girls. It might take them a little bit longer to get there, because socialization is a powerful drug, but they'd get there.

This.

My husband switched schools as a teen to a public school that happened to be 80% girls and discovered that when you're the majority, you start taking on the dominant roles. So a lot of social roles got swapped. It was the girls who were outwardly aggressive and the boys who were passively aggressive. Girls were the ones brawling in the hallways, boys were the ones cattily egging it on.

I had pretty nice schools most of my childhood, only seeing shades of the harsher end in my last two years, but even then I was mostly an outsider. Ironically, that was also about the time I read "Lord of teh Flies".

Not that I dispute your idea that females can be brutal, but I just think female cruelty can go in a more psychological direction and I am not sure I have faith that a female "Lord of the Flies" would take it to the extent it needs to be true to the female psyche. I suspect they will try to force a group of girl characters into the same behaviour patterns as the original boy characters.
