It would be disrespectful to gloss over abuse, but the abuse you see taking place in the show? Is not canon. It does not happen in the books. Adaptations that don't show the abuse aren't glossing over anything because there was nothing to gloss over. The Netflix TV show added that for extra pathos and because they wanted a grimmer version of the story.

She's an orphan at the turn of the last century. It's not a stretch or something thrown in just to add "grit" to think she would've been abused.

Anne is *really* cagey about exactly what happened to her, but at the very least, she mentions that Mr Thomas was habitually drunk and that she thinks both Mrs Thomas and Mrs Bolingbroke *meant* to treat her kindly, but that they were under a lot of stress. You can read that either as Anne having been neglected, but nothing worse, or that Anne did suffer some degree of physical abuse, IMO, particularly as children in that period would have taken some degree of corporal punishment as normal.
