I understand what they meant and it's not wrong but I still think even as you frame it it's incomplete. The system regulating hunger and nutrition and energy and exercise is complex and powerful, in a way that can't be reduced to "calories in calories out". And reducing it in that way supports the idea that the main determining factor in weight loss is will power, and that people who don't lose weight are simply lacking in will power, which I think is an actively wrong and harmful idea / approach.
