I'm sorry, but I see a real difference between the two. I have seen fake tattoos on shows and movies that just look a lot more like real tattoos than that. I don't know what make-up magic they use to do it.

Also, the 'real' link is clearly a brand new, unhealed tattoo, under harsh light.

I know Temptu is one brand. They originally developed alcohol inks and transfers used in the 1981 film Tattoo. Since they're not water-based, they hold up better and longer between applications, which helps reduce time in the makeup chair, especially for heavily-tattooed characters.

Lightly powdering over the (dry) application also increases verisimilitude by mimicking the translucency of the skin over a tattoo. And since it's a very thin ink to begin with, you don't get texture/light reflection issues.

In that close up from the show, you can see the reflected light change at the edge of the transfer they've used.
