I just got offered a mod position :/

(Anonymous) 2017-09-02 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
I've been spending a lot of time on one particular subreddit. And I hit a point where I thought, OK, I give up, I'm being obsessive about this, and it's sucking up my time.

I kind of wanted to quit.

So, of course, today they offered me a chance to be a mod.

I've never been a mod. I don't know how to be a mod. I think I will get tired of it. I'm not really on there all the time, anyway, and I don't want to be. I don't think I want to be a mod, but mostly I don't have any idea how that works. I can't even tell what all the mod functions are on the application.

Is this an opportunity I should take? Is the opportunity to learn something worth it?

By the sounds of it, it'd just add unnecessary stress onto you. Fandoming should be fun, not a chore.

I'd say take it. If it doesn't work out and it's not for you, then that's cool, but maybe trying it could be an experience. Maybe let them know beforehand that you're a bit unsure and that you may not want to keep the position if it doesn't feel right?

I hope it works out for you whatever you choose to do!

The impression I get from everything you've written here is that you really don't want to take it. Your heart's not in it. Don't do it.

If you already want to quit the sub, you should not become a mob. The chance to learn about being a mod is not ever going to outweigh the hassle and bullshit.

No and no, unless an epeen means anything to you. Which it shouldn't.

Well, if it's something you neither have the time nor patience for, what do you think you will gain from it? How will your presence and position be beneficial for a subreddit you don't even want to be on?

You can also think of it from a regular user's point of view. Would you like to post on a message board where the mod doesn't really know what they are doing, and doesn't have the time or desire to learn?

Whatever you decide, make sure you're not inconveniencing others just for the sake of proving something to yourself. (For the record, I'm of the opinion that declining a job you don't want is NOT an inconvenience on others. It would free up the position for someone who genuinely wants it.)
