That person is stupid tbh. BL is made by straight women for straight woman and it's great that women have voyeuristic porn tailormade for them too like men have. I don't like when straight women appropiate queer narratives, but BL is not queer, is porn for women, their toy, let them have fun with it. And I'm saying this as a MLM.

I'd say more generally BL is for women. Because I do know lots of queer women who like it too. It's not really 'for' one set of women more than the other.

I'm a lesbian and I love BL. You could say it's generally written by women and the genre implies it is targeted toward women. But don't say it's only for straight women; it's not, bi and even lesbian women make up a significant portion of fans and it's okay if they use it as a way to explore their own sexuality.

but wtf, it is by definition queer. It is about two blokes fucking each other, it is queer, you can't say it isn't queer. there's nothing no homo about it. It's just as queer as any gay porn. The characters don't need to attend a rainbow-filled Pride Parade for it to be queer.

nayrt

it is by definition queer

it could be argued that it is the same level of "queer" as women having sex with each other in mainstream porn.

While I can understand why you're trying to make a distinction, in a fictional story about two men loving each other and having sex with each other, there's no way to say it isn't queer.

Frankly, two women having sex with each other in mainstream porn is still two women having sex with each other in mainstream porn, and therefore also gay. You can argue that the actresses aren't gay, but in fiction, there's obviously no such disclaimer. The characters are legitimately in love and in a relationship.

Anyway, why does the relationship that fiction has with the audience define whether or not it is queer? Ficton should be able to stand on its own. It's not exactly subtle when you have two same-sex people in a romantic and sexual relationship; it's literally a matter of definition.

Anyway, why does the relationship that fiction has with the audience define whether or not it is queer?

Generally, probably that thing about objectifying/fetishizing someone's sexual orientation in fiction, while having no interest in improving conditions for living, breathing people who face violence and discrimination because of their sexual orientations.

Personally, it is watching works by female creators with a form and a content clearly geared at a female audience being praised to the high heavens by their female fans for being queer friendly for including m/m romances. It is TELLING that these stories either has no f/f pairings, or if they do, it is between minor characters that receive no-where the same attention.

My point is that it doesn't have to have any social agenda to be queer. It is queer not by whether or not it seeks to preach about gay tolerance or improve conditions for LGBT folks. It is queer because it has a queer relationship, that's it.

As I said, I'm a lesbian - I'm a woman who sleeps with women who has been at the brunt of homophobia on more than one occasion. And I agree it's annoying and even, yes, problematic, for straight people to think they are somehow ~gay friendly~ because they masturbate to same-sex porn. By all means, that's a discussion worth having.

But it doesn't mean BL isn't gay. It is, regardless of how stupid fans can be, it is still about gay relationships and gay sex.

Personally, I am so sick of "LGBT media" that is only about LGBT social movements, homophobia, rainbows, and pride parades. I have no interest in social justice media, tbh. But those elements are not what makes something queer. Only the queerness makes it queer.
