Queer is a slur; not everyone is going to want it applied to them. Furthermore, the queer community and the gay community haven't historically been the same thing and have been known to clash on issues. I find it a disservice to force people to accept a word, community and history which they aren't comfortable with. And this comes from someone who actually IS queer. Furthermore, queer is very unclear. There's genderqueer, gay/lesbian queer and a queer underneath the bi+ umbrella. My version of queer may not be your version of queer. it muddles the resources a lot.

Bi+ people tend to be completely erased in these narratives. I've been out looking for parenting and other resources for me and my partner. There's nothing except "lesbian" for a woman in a relationship with another woman in many places, and a lot of the lesbian resources have been actively hostile to people attracted to multiple genders. I can choose my closet. I can can pretend to be a lesbian for scraps of civility and resources, or pretend to be just roommates for scraps of civility the straights.

Or, I can go to wlw spaces and be treated like a human being and not have to cut parts of myself off.

WLW amd mlm may be newer as terms, but the unification is so much better. It's simple and easier and neither are based on slurs. It doesn't erase lesbian or bi+ history and in my opinion is the best new thing that has happened to the lgbt+ movement as it finally gives the lesbian/bi+ community a way to speak to each other about what they share.
