The small town is the setting. The "whodunnit" part is that someone in this small town with a small group of possible suspects has committed a crime and an outsider (in this case, Tennant's character) must figure out who's the killer, and that type of plot is very, very common.

I loved Broadchurch and I've even written fanfic for it, but I have to agree with this. It had great acting performances in my opinion and I wouldn't say it's predictable, but I read a lot of mysteries and it is a very common plot.

Exactly. I'm not slamming Broadchurch because I thought it was very well done. But IMO its strength is the cast and their acting, not necessarily the writing. Like the OP, I actually found the Big Reveal to be somewhat anticlimactic but then it's hard to sustain that sort of tension for a whole season.

Same. But is anyone (in the modern era, at least) watching mysteries because they want to be surprised by the ending?

The acting and the emotional fallout is what did it for me. And the cinematography, which is gorgeous.

I don't expect to be blown out of the water by the ending, but ideally I like to feel some small sense of surprise followed by an epiphany as everything clicks into place and you go, "Ohhhh, of COURSE."
