Mushrooms

I am so grossed out by the nasty mushrooms in my yard. They grow in little clumps and last for about two days before becoming ragged-looking, while dusting the ground around them with gray spores, then they disintegrate into a horrible black heap of mush. And they smell. Today was a nice day, I had the window open and a breeze kept blowing in, carrying on it the unpleasant scent of rotten mushroom heaps.

And then I found a common stinkhorn in the backyard, too.

But...some look like vaginas that turn into penises! And, the big ones with tops you can kick.

Yeah, the common stinkhorns look penis-like. I was actually surprised to find one in my yard, because usually I just see the "dog stinkhorns" around. They're red, and I guess look like dog dicks?

They're gross and attract flies, but they're not my least favorite fungus.

there are definitely mushroom enthusiasts. and I'm guessing they like, talk about it online and stuff? so I want to say yes. I want to believe yes.

Our garden is infested with stinkhorns and it's the worst thing to ever have happened to the garden. We have to spend up to an hour each day just to search and kill them, ideally when they're not yet grown. It's a lot if work, but the alternative is having a garden that smells like the zombie apocalypse in full swing and... no.

Mushrooms are amazing because the part you see is just the fruit of the fungus, like the proverbial tip of the ice berg. The rest of the fungus consists of many, many filaments extending in a network through the dead log, soil, whatever the mushrooms grow on.

Think about that while you like awake in bed tonight.
