Having proof of a diagnosis helped me get assistance from Vocational Rehabilitation.

I was diagnosed six years ago when I was twenty-four. My uncle (really my Dad's friend), is a physician assistant. He was visiting and asked my Mom what she was going to do about me because of my various problems and mentioned that I showed signs of being on the Autism spectrum. He paid for me to see someone he knew that specialized in diagnosing people with Autism.
