Denver, with some good shopping.

Most my cars have cost around $500, and granted they only last a few years but a few years of having a car is better then many years of having a doll, no matter how pretty it may be.

Damn, around here, hunks of junk will run at least $900, closer to 2k+. Still, if someone has the kind of job where they can afford to blow $500 every few months, then that's cool with me. I stick to my smaller dolls, because I know I don't have the money for that sort of thing.

The aggreance was more towards the "art" of photographing them then the cost. If I had buckets of money to blow I'd probably buy one too.

Check for local like...police/government auctions. I got my current one (A 90 something Chevy 4 door with AC and radio) for $600.

So you agree that if you didn't create the item being photographed, it's not art?

Yeah, the police auctions usually run the cheapest here. I have a friend who has bought every car he owns from them for less than 1k, but they rarely have cheap cars anymore, and they get snatched up fast. (Most of the drug dealers and the like around here who get their cars impounded usually have super-nice, tricked out cars, so even the police sell them for high prices.) Your car's a steal. That's awesome.

Photography is a medium, not an art unto it's self. There can be pieces of art involving dolls (Like this (http://babyducks.deviantart.com/art/Christmas-will-be-ours-72143750), or this (http://dalaiharma.deviantart.com/art/Barbie-Girl-81819458). Unfortunately I don't have any example on hand for BJDs, but I've seen 'em before) but most BJD "Art" is picture like that in the secret. "Here, let me take my toy, light it dramatically, and snap a few shots." And no, I don't consider that art whether it's a BJD, an Ipod, or a human being. It's just a way to record something, and doing it with an artistic medium does not to me make it art right away, just like doing your household account in oil paints doesn't make them art (Though, very messy :3)

It's not an opinion held by all, but to me yeah...to be art you have to do more then point and click. Or else I have a shit load of "Art" of things like my family sitting around the pool, and my friends getting drunk at parties.

I am growing fond of it. Though it does have it's issues (Like the last owner carving "help me" in the window tint. :/ but hey, it gets me from point a to point b, gets awesome gas millage and thus far doesn't not seem to be haunted by the victims of any serial killer)

I make a distinction between snapshots and photographs (both in general and in my comment), but what makes me disagree with the secret OP is their absolute view of it. They don't say, "just taking random shots of your doll propped up against the dresser isn't art," they say, "if you didn't make it, it's not art."

I think there are three kinds of BJD photos:
1) Story photos. These are photos where the dolls are being used to tell a story. These are like illustrations in a book.
2) Photoshoots. These are just like human photoshoots. They run the gamut from camwhore/this-is-what-I-wore-today to fashion photography and coffee table-book quality prints.
3) C-Whut-I-Did-Here. These can be photos of wigs, of faceups, or of clothes. These are usually the crappiest photos, with hands holding the dolls up, pulling the clothes to the side. These can just be, "I got my doll! Isn't she beautiful?!" pictures, which might be what the OP's friends keep showing them, but they aren't meant to be art, any more than showing your friend your junior prom photos to show your clothes or something.

Someone carved into the car? Wow. I guess the scarier alternative would be a passenger carving that, but maybe it was just a bored kid... If you start hearing strange knocking noises from the trunk, it might be time to call an old priest and a young priest, though... D:

Yeah, I think you're categories are pretty fair, and cover most the bases. I think what the OP objects to (And what I object to, what with them being on my DA front page all the time) is the "Look at my pretty doll!" and/or "Camera whore" type pictures getting so much attention (And, like I said, it doesn't just bother me in dolls, although that trend had been popping up more and more lately)

Yeah it was a pretty freaky thing to notice. I was very D:
