I must be doing it wrong because I don't find it hard or time consuming to crop an image and adjust the colour and contrast.

Depends on how much time you put into it, I guess. I tend to be really careful about where to crop and how much of the picture to use (trying to fit too much of the shot in the picture and I think it gets too small, etc etc). I just learned a shortcut as to sharpening pictures really well, but if the colors seem a bit off it can take some fine-tuning. You also get the people who take a few hours and make a TON of bases- and in that case, each individual base might not have taken a long time, but there was effort put into the project as a whole, so it's still pretty cool of them to put the effort in.

The fact remains, the icon was getting complimented- if I say "oh, hey, nice icon!" even to a simply-colored base, I tend to like the way it's colored, or what part of the picture was used, the effect of the crop... Sometimes I even compliment a person for a "just cropped and recolored" icon, despite seeing the same shot with added text and effects etc etc, because I DO like the simplicity of it.

Personally, I like how clean that icon is, how simple it is- it doesn't really need text like "overcoming PAIN" or something in it like someone else might do, and while I think some of the left side could have been taken off to give it a better balance, mostly I like the crop job.

SORRY TO TL;DR YOU, I don't even think we're really arguing, I just. Kinda want to explain where it's coming from on the other side? Something like that.

Haha, I get where you're coming from. :)

And it's refreshing to know I'm not the only one that likes simple icons. :s I get overwhelmed when I see an icon with fifty billion filters and fancy tiny text all smashed into a 100 x 100 pixel box.

Yeah, I do like icons with effects and text, but there's a right way to do it, and when it just piles things on it looks ridiculous IMO. Most of the icons I tend to really love are usually simple ones where it's just. A picture worth a thousand words to me. :>
