You can delete tumblrs, its one of the few things they get right.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-06 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
But individual posts will still live on in the reblogs, so I'm not sure how helpful that is...

(Anonymous) 2017-09-06 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
And screenshots (especially if they post stupid shit on Twitter.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-06 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. This is the sort of comment I expect from really old people who don't know how the internet works and really young people who don't have the maturity to understand longterm consequences.

Like the other anon said, those fuckers on tumblr screencap everything for 'receipts' collection to pull out years later and try to prove someone is a piece of shit.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-06 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand the sentiment, but don't think tumblrs are that permanent, or (fortunately) that connected to real names. MySpace hasn't haunted most people into adulthood, and IMO this won't either.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-06 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, we seem to be in an era of oversharing, where, even if the screenname is not a real name, people seem to want to volunteer everything, including their real name.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-07 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
Fandom blogs on tumblr, for the most part, people don't share their real names or pictures of themselves so those people are safe from it affecting their real lives. However, I know plenty of SJW's who will fucking track you down to the ends of the earth over one tiny thing... so it's best to just keep to yourself.

I dunno about myspace, but twitter and facebook sure as hell continuously land people in hot water to the point it affects their careers and personal life.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-06 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why using an alias and never giving any indication of who you are IRL was the rule back in the day. Does tumblr require you to use your real name or link to Facebook or something? Just be a weird screen name on tumbr and be vague about who you are and where you live.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-06 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, the whole selfie trend these days will likely haunt a lot of young people even if their names are not attached to the tumbler account.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-06 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed.

Nope. You can be whoever you want to be on Tumblr, all you need is an email.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-07 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
You don't HAVE to put any personal info, but people do put their age and location. Some even have selfie tags and links to their twitter.

Any dedicated asshole can put the pieces together and expose you. You just have to be as vague as possible and try not to link accounts if you can't avoid giving any personal info.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-06 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, tumblr is no way to save history. No link ever stays clickable. It's basically a dry-erase board.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-07 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
People screenshot everything. Changing your name only works if you completely delete your account. If you know someones previous name you just have to search it and you can easily find their new account. Even easier if you ever liked/reblogged a post from them.

Then again I've also seen some really dedicated assholes track peoples other accounts even when they were deleted.

First off, I like the picture for this secret. Just wanted to say that :D.

Second, I can sympathize with this. I was 16 before my family got a computer in our home, and that was back in 2000. About the only thing I'd have to worry about internet-wise from my teen years is if somebody decided for whatever reason to dig up some stupid post I made on some long-defunct message board :p.

RA

I was about 13/14, and I was about as enthusiastic as the squirrel in the secret. Just thinking about how excited (and probably embarrassing) I was on an equally now defunct message board makes me cringe and smile with nostalgia and a bit of shame. Everyone on the board was so nice though, they probably knew I was the baby of the board and never said anything.

I've never related to a secret more.

I'm honestly just so glad that social media was not a thing while I was growing up, fuck knows I was a stupid kid and I'd never want any of it stuck on the internet forever.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-06 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if the problem is tumblr so much as people being stupid about their privacy.

I don't know how getting a tumblr account works, but if there's nothing visible to the public that links to your real identity and you don't post anything that would allow most people (except possibly people who already know you offline, should they stumble across the blog) to figure out who you are (even in a vague "This is a young adult female who attends [specific small liberal arts college], lives on campus, has brown hair, and is kind of short" kind of way) and you don't post clear pictures of yourself or your living space... I think you should be fine.

If someone wanted to figure out the real identity of a particular tumblr user, there are probably ways (probably helps to stay out of wank, then) but if someone met you offline and wanted to figure out if you had a secret tumblr... where would they even start to look? They won't know.

Idk, it's easy to be anonymous on Tumblr. I'd be far more worried about non fandom social media, like Facebook.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-07 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Facebook is what I'd be worried about. And that's mostly grownups (who ought to know better, but that's another topic).

David Gonterman was humiliating himself online a decade before Tumblr even existed.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-07 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
The problem isn't so much tumblr, it's twitter. Most everyone who has tumblr has a twitter and links it on their account anyways.

People might not overshare about their personal stuff on tumblr, but they will on twitter.

When I tried to create a throw away twitter account for the sake of following a few people, it immediately recommended people in my area to add. It was fucking creepy. Makes me think if I make a cringe-y fandom twitter that it will show up as a recommended blog for people in my area.

Twitter just leaves you completely exposed. At least tumblr doesn't try as hard to get your personal info or pinpoint where you live and the people around you.
