Oh good, someone else who read these as a pre-teen. I never really thought about it, I guess because I read the first one in third grade and kind of glossed over the rape (I was more creeped out by the ritual cannibalism) and I was maybe eleven when I read the second one and by then I was reading it specifically for the porny bits. Okay, and the "how to survive in the wilderness" bits.
