What would you buy on a shopping spree?

(Anonymous) 2017-09-09 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
If you could buy whatever you wanted for a day--not to sell or give away, but for your own personal use--what would it be? I'm trying to talk myself out of a spending spree, help me live vicariously, please.

Context: I inherited a neglected garden to revitalize and I'm trying to convince myself not to buy ALL THE FLOWER BULBS, because I also inherited a house that needs insuring and repairing and appliances replaced and proprty taxes paid and I probably have to hire a lawyer and it's not like I won the lotto. But there's like 6,000 square feet of mostly empty yard and my brain's going BUT DAFFODILS AND LILIES AND IRISES AND HYACINTHS AND...
And if I start looking at roses or fruit trees it'll be all over.

Can my shopping spree include a house and stuff for the house? If money were no object, I'd love to buy a house that needed some work and fix it up. As it is, I can only daydream about buying something very small with no major problems because I will never be able to afford the alternatives.

If not, and if I had to stick to a theme, probably a bunch of outdoor/camping gear.

Books. I would buy a whole ton of books. I'd go to Barnes and Noble and buy everything on the scifi, fantasy, and truecrime shelves I didn't have. And probably some history and sociology stuff too. Then I'd go on Amazon and buy more scifi and fantasy.

Clothes and expensive art supplies that I will never, ever use because I DON'T WANT TO WASTE THEM

I'd go to a Costco and get as much household stuff as I could grab in a day. SO MUCH TOILET PAPER.

High-end makeup, skincare products, perfume, clothes, and accessories. A leather couch, a big screen tv, some gold-plated cutlery (or hell, 10K gold cutlery), a set of really good knives, and some real wood furniture.

Out of interest, gold cutlery because you like the look or because gold is supposed to be the best at not affecting flavor?

I wish I could say the latter, but truthfully, I didn't know that about gold until now. (Thanks for the info!) Really, I just love the look of it.

Fair enough :)

I too would likely buy a lot of things for my backyard. :) But I would also buy a large number of gift cards for grocery stores, WalMart, and McDonalds, so I'd have extra grocery money in the months ahead. Then I'd buy one each of the fancy cheeses in the grocery store because I'm in the mood for a cheese-tasting platter, and those things are expensive! Also I'd buy some cute rag rugs for my house, and a new bed and mattress.

Then I would probably one-click about a hundred items on my Amazon wishlist. Books and things I need or want, and stuff like this, because it looks cute: amazon.com/dp/B00QAR9I3M/

But I'm not going to do any of that because I'm being FISCALLY RESPONSIBLE.
:)

Best of luck with your new/old property and the many things it requires! Someday you'll have a beautiful backyard filled with flowers and (hopefully) fruit trees.

How big are we talking? Because I would buy a house.

A smallish one, with a garden, in a village. Old but recently renovated so insulated and with good heating and plumbing. Somewhere with clean air to breathe and quiet, unlike where I rent. I could probably knock up a list of everything I'd want to decorate it with too both inside and out, so I would spend all day bulk ordering that.

Namely nice, thick good quality carpets, wood furniture, stained glass lamp, a navy blue couch, a pretty chair, bookcases bookcases bookcases, a woodburner, a range cooker, quality kitchenware, etc etc.

Outside I'd order night blooming jasmine, cast iron porch furniture, roses, herbs of all kinds, a rowan tree sapling.

And then I'd order 100 macarons. Because.

OP, and I would buy the aforementioned flower bulbs, and a bunch of rosebushes, and violets. And wasabi roots because my mom wanted to grow them and vanilla orchids because I always wanted to try growing them. For the landscaping I would get lots of sedges and salvias and a few small trees for the park strip. All the materials for new roofs, windows (with screens because fuck mosquitos), a new stove, refrigerator, and sink basin, faucets, flooring, shower doors... And I would buy gift certificates for Home Depot and Target and my favorite local nursery and Trader Joe's and Amazon and then probably buy new furniture and then go ransack all the local fabric stores. And while I'm dreaming, a pair of dwarf milch goats and supplies and food for them.

Clothes, jewelry, a blue Jaguar car, a Shiba Inu puppy, a bottle of champagne from my birth year, a year or three in Hawaii.

Whyyyyyy did you have to mention flower bulbs? The catalog for a big wholesale bulb house is right here on my desk. (Van Engelen, in case you're curious--not to be confused with Van Bourgondien, which I gather has become increasingly crappy indecent years.). If you ever want a thousand or so daffodils, or maybe 50 mixed Oriental lilies, this is where to go.

And yes, this is where I'd blow my dough right now if I didn't have a roof to replace. Bulbs and old roses.
