Yeah it felt like a cheap emotional payout and a waste of a strong character and possibilities.

OTOH Gamora and Nebula's whole arc had some real meat and I was so moved by their working some of their issues out.

100% agreed. I was happy that Gamora and Nebula explored their difficult relationship, but Yondu's death just felt like a waste. He's one of the more interesting characters and there was so much potential. I don't think the pathos of his death was worth it.
