(Anonymous) 2017-09-11 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)I do like how they handle certain issues though, in ways that most other shows never would. Like their abortion episode, and the animal rights episode.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-12 01:33 am (UTC)(link)But Todd came out as asexual in S4, that's nice.

But I'm a little put out that it seems everyone is overlooking how all the women, including Hollyhock, had really good storylines this season.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-12 02:07 am (UTC)(link)I haven't seen the whole season yet, so I can't comment as to character development over the whole thing. So I'm not overlooking the female storylines, I literally haven't seen them finish.
But I do have a couple of ace friends that now have canon representation in the media, which is a big deal for them, and I'm happy on their behalf.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-12 06:20 am (UTC)(link)Yeah. I'm ace, and I was actually really confused by some of Todd's actions in S3, especially that entire episode where he awkwardly avoids having sex with Emily. Like, it didn't even occur to me that he might be ace, because that's just not something that ever happens on tv. And then a couple of days later while I was out and about, the thought occurred to me, and I looked it up right away (because I hadn't watched that far yet), and when I thought back to that episode and was able to place it in context, I got all wibbly and teared up. Not just because of the representation, but because for me, those scenes with Emily just rang incredibly true. Todd's awkward, palpable discomfort in the bar, and then his strange, horrible sadness once he's alone. The writers get an A+ from me for that; it was really well done, and I'm grateful for it.
(I also haven't seen all of S4 yet, and so cannot comment on the female character's arcs. However, imo the show has always done relatively right by its female characters, and that's been one of my favorite things about it.)

I also get why the animal puns and world-building would be the big draw for some people.
If it makes you feel better OP: the creators have flat-out admitted that "Bojack Horseman" would not be the success it is if it were not for the animal/world-building element. They also wouldn't get away with as much shit as they do if it was live action as opposed to a cartoon.
So it turns out you're in pretty good company.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-12 03:19 am (UTC)(link)Plus the creator feels... weird to me? Like that whole thing he wrote about Marge Simpson that ignored a bunch of stuff about Simpson's canon, how she doesn't have anyone but her kids and her abusive husband. Like, alright man, that's your interpretation?
