I'd say they should have waited to announce this after Last Jedi came out - actually, they should have. They already pushed it back to December 2019 so production didn't need to start in Jan like originally planned.

Now people are going to lament about what could have been with Rian at the helm. Which they were already going to do of course.

People will lament no matter what (unless it's somehow a masterpiece). I think LF is just trying to bring calm back. Ron Howard has been tweeting all those pictures and I think that's a concerted effort from LF to calm people's fears for Han Solo. They're going to want to do the same with 9. This way, people will see TLJ and know where to put their expectations when it makes them excited for 9. Plus, TLJ will soon dominate the SW news so this will be buried among all the (hopefully) good news there.

I hope JJ at least lets Rian throw some ideas at him. I do think pushing production is a lot trickier than it sounds with so many busy actors. They've already messed with Han Solo's production; they're probably not eager to do it again, and may want as much time as possible in case of any more unforeseen hiccups.

With the four (three? I count L&M as one entity) firings, this is the second best one. No one wanted Trevorrow to do this. I was mostly indifferent but there was a goddamn petition that he responded to like a year ago to get him off this project (I can't believe people were THAT dedicated). Book of Henry killed it.

I think some people are relieved he's gone but not thrilled with JJ because they think TFA was a rehash.

I do think Rian will have some input.
