I'm going to make a lot of statements about how I'm interpreting what has been said in this subthread. If you are the person whose words I'm interpreting, and you feel I've misunderstood you, please enlighten me.

To answer your question about what does the cast being real people have to do with anything when the topic in question is stories?

Anon1 is saying: I watch this show/play/movie and I've engaged with it in such a way that I want to discuss with other people the underlying themes and the messages it sent and how those things made me feel and what they mean as a work created in a broader society.

Anon2 is saying: People want to engage with the cast because they're actors who made choices within the narrative of the story.

The problem here is that because meaning is so personal, conversations are hard. Anon1 wants to talk about stories and content. Anon2 is saying that, as far as shows/movies/plays are concerned, those actors are real people who influenced the story itself through the character choices they made.

And because no one knows how to express those thoughts, it comes off as "Story story story" and "I want to talk about character because choices" and they're shot down with "but story story story!!!" and so they then project onto the actors themselves because the actors are real people. So they end up going overboard by overfocusing on the person and ignoring the story completely.

At least. That's how I'm interpreting the ideas that Anons1 and 2 have put forth and why those ideas seem contrary, but in reality, are simply a misunderstanding.

Anon 1 here - watch this show/play/movie and I've engaged with it in such a way that I want to discuss with other people the underlying themes and the messages it sent and how those things made me feel and what they mean as a work created in a broader society.

That's exactly what I was trying to say. I also think Anon 2 thought I was being more divisive than I was, although I may be misinterpreting their response as sarcasm. (Tone on the internet!) Also, as I tried to make clear, I don't think it's anything anyone's doing wrong in this instance - I realize a lot of it is my own lack of pop culture savvy.

Anon2 is saying that, as far as shows/movies/plays are concerned, those actors are real people who influenced the story itself through the character choices they made.

If that's what they meant, then that makes perfect sense.

It's also possible Anon 2 hasn't encountered the sort of fandoms I have, and thus interpreted my comment as "we shouldn't ever mention the actors", whereas I mean that talking about the actors is fine! I just have problems with fandoms that focus way more on the actors than the story itself. Those fandoms do exist. (Supernatural seems like such a fandom, but I could be wrong.)

:)

I get you. Tone is hard and meaning is variable.
