Re: "If you can't find fic you like, write it yourself!"

Yeah, but honestly it's dumb, unhelpful advice. In many ways, it's about as helpful as saying, oh, you can't find a pair of pants you like? Just sew yourself a pair! Not everyone can write, much less write the sort of fic that they want to read. Even if you could, that's hardly the same as finding the right fic that scratches your itch, you know? Especially because it means there's an audience for this type of thing besides yourself, and lots of people are in fandom for the community aspect of it.

That said, I had a general yearning to read a longer, plotty fic in a certain fandom. I gave it a try and people liked it. But it's not the same thing at all as finding a great fic someone else wrote and just devouring it with fresh eyes and no knowledge of what the ending was like, etc.

OP

Oh, totally. Reading something someone else wrote and not knowing what's going to happen is absolutely a different thing, and of course what I'd prefer.

I think I might enjoy it in a different way, though. I haven't written in years and would like to start again and get some practice, and I really, really love this pairing so it might be a good opportunity to do that. It's entirely possible (and probably very likely, given that it's putting half of a really popular ship with someone else) that no one will like it, and I might end up not even posting it anywhere. But I think it could be fun, even if it ends up just being for myself.
