It's weird to contextualize it that way, though. He's been hearing people suffering and dying all around him since he was a little kid, and pretending the urge to help people is like a drug addiction is just...wrong to my mind. His adrenaline addiction and his anger is something he needs help with. But you can tell from the first Defenders episode after the earthquake when he hears bad shit happening and his face gets all twisted up that his motivation isn't some monkey on his back.

NAYRT

I think for Matt, it's not just about helping people. There's some kind of self-sacrifice, almost to the point of seeking self-destruction. He doesn't just want to help people, he wants to completely use himself up and destroy himself for the sake of other people. And that's not healthy or good.

I mean, Foggy gave him things where he was helping people. And there was the case he took at the beginning. He doesn't have to be self-destructive, even if he's doing the vigilante thing. However, his Daredevil schtick is something that's linked to his self-destructive behavior.

Think of it from their perspective, of when they found out.

Foggy: His best friend is bleeding the fuck out on the floor.

Karen: Their company just broke up, largely because the vigilante side of things was causing Matt's civilian life to implode.

If I was in their side of things, even knowing the whole "he can see and hear everything going on," I'd still think the same way.
