People are stupid. I bet even more people would get mad about people dressing up like Hydra.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-17 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Boy, you got it in there quick. I mean, this story has nothing whatsoever to do with the people you're mad at on Tumblr and you really went right there with no wind-up at all.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-17 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't mention Tumblr. But I am equating someone dressing up for a costume party as a fictional character with people dressing up for a con as a fictional character.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-17 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Dressing up as a fictional character who happens to be an actual Nazi is different from dressing up as a fictional character who's a member of a fictional supervillain organization

(Anonymous) 2017-09-17 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. Hydra has NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with Nazis. No similarities or anything.

Given that an openly described strategy of white supremacists is to use pop-culture memes to signal each other while flying under the radar of moderators who ban Nazi and Klan symbols explicitly, I think being skeptical of the people behind Hyrda cosplay and symbols is reasonable.

From Rose City Comic Con's Cosplay policy:

Hateful symbols aren’t welcome at Rose City Comic Con. Historical costumes can be great, but reminders of unspeakable atrocities are not appropriate – this goes for Old School Hydra and Red Skull or any other Nazis from entertainment properties. Those figures, while comic-related, are still very much Nazis. As a result, they are 100% banned, always. This includes any sort of “ironic” or satirical costumes that re-appropriate Nazi paraphernalia or gear. You won’t just be banned from that year’s convention. You will be banned from coming to RCCC for life.

So. Yep.

not to familiar with Star Wars, so I don't know how analogous Storm Troopers are but I'm guessing Death Eaters are a definite 'no'.

I think they're only talking about groups that are fictional portrayals or direct allegories of Nazis and hate groups.

storm troopers are certainly linked to Nazi's. Allegorical, definitely.

Well, considering that the name alone is a very obvious parallel, the bad guys in Star Wars have always been quite obvious in their inspiration. And in TFA, they sent every last bit of subtlety down the garbage chute with a massively cringey and heavy handed direct copy of the Nuremberg Rally, colour coded flags and all. So at the very least, all those General Hux cosplays should earn their cosplayers a ban for life if they're actually consistent about it.

I don't think it makes him a Nazi, but I do think it makes him stupid as hell and insensitive. And well-off British dudes seem to have kind of a thing for dressing up as Nazis for costume parties which makes me think it might not just be an isolated incident of misjudgment.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-18 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
I've seen people of other races dress as nazis. Where's the condemnation for them too? Or do they get a free pass because they're not white?

(Anonymous) 2017-09-17 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
What's with white British dudes thinking it's cool to dress up like Nazis? It is irony? Not having any boundaries? Complete tone-deafness? I mean, America is pretty shitty in general about white supremacy lately (and it's been a simmering undercurrent for a long time if we're going to be honest about it), but I can't recall anytime where people here thought it was OK to dress up like a Nazi for Halloween, etc. It's just not acceptable here, as far as I can tell. But in Britain people think it's OK?? Srsly?? Is this just a cultural difference like the word "fanny" (aka fanny pack) having a completely different meaning in Britain, or is it actually thinking Nazis are a funny / cool / ironic thing to dress as?

It's using your sorority parties of people dressed up in blackface or the KKK as representative of some greater point. Like why do American lads feels it's cool to paint themselves in blackface, and dress up in 'gangsta' clothing.

But if we're pretending it is a particular thing, we got bombed on home ground by them (they teach about The Blitz in American schools?), so feel more able to have N clothing privileges, because we recognise it in the context of people who tried to bomb our island into surrender. Means you mythologise them less as some super special symbol of evil and see them for what they actually were.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-18 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
The boys who do that are assholes. It's not socially acceptable. So are you saying he's an asshole for doing that? That it's a privledge you guys have EARNED somehow to dress up like Nazis?? WTF

(Anonymous) 2017-09-19 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
I think what I'll omen ed is saying is that it's not an admiration thing, it's a 'fuck you' thing. A 'we beat you now we're mocking you' thing.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-18 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
The TV show element and when this happened is really crucial context here.

Remember that at the time the world was very different and right wing real Nazis were a very small group who were basically considered nut jobs and held no political sway. Nazis were considered a spent force.

The show itself showed the characters as very human on all sides. And by that I don't mean as good people. I mean as people driven by their own combination of greeds and lust etc who just happen to be either on the good side or bad side. Because it was set a backwater in post-occupation France there was no killing etc. But because of the subject matter there were often initially funny but then chilling reminders of the real situation and the imbalance of power.

Dressing as a character from the show isn't really the cool/edgy thing you think it was supposed to be. Especially as, again, this was satire of a bygone time.

Now nazism is on the rise again and the world is very different. If he'd done this now it would be a very different story.

Yeah, this. Cos-playing as one of the German officers from Allo, Allo is basically cos-playing a comically venal small-time baddie. It's not shouting 'look at me I'm breaching a taboo!!!11!!11!1!'

I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he wouldn't do it now.

Wait, I think I recognise the ears. Is it the actor from Eli Stone? If so, he's very slashable, can confirm. There is even that one long fic his char and Eli on AO3. Anyway, I'm still not ging to watch Arrowverse despite all the hot actors - they even got Felton! The third Arrow season was too much of a let down.

btw what are the tropes OP's talking about?

(Anonymous) 2017-09-17 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol, misfire, but yeah, that's the dude from Eli Stone. Also, Syd Bristow's dad on Alias (Jack Bristow was awesome). Also, I'm pretty sure they tried to give him a show of his own a decade back. He was a hotshot lawyer, and IIRC kind of acerbic and not overly nice (in the wake of House's massive success and all...unless I'm confusing his character with Shark).

(Anonymous) 2017-09-17 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Victor Garber is the actor and I believe the show you're thinking of is Justice, which actually predates Eli Stone

(Anonymous) 2017-09-17 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I have nothing to add, but I agree with you OP.
