That's not how it works. My dad was a jock in high school and really fit, but as he got older he got a big beer belly. Just because you are fit in your youth doesn't mean you will always remain fit as you age.

Especially since Robert drank A LOT and over indulged everything else including food.

+1. He's tall, has broad shoulders and thick legs, plus a big belly and they've made him up to look tired and puffy. That's the classic jock-gone-to-seed look.

Robert Baratheon is supposed to be (kind of, inasmuch as Game of Thrones was somewhat inspired by the Wars of the Roses) an analogue to Edward IV, who was a great warrior when he was younger, but after he aged turned to fat. His grandson, Henry VIII, was much the same way--great athlete when he was younger, suffered an accident and turned to fat. I think the actor playing RB looks Henry-esque. Just my $.02.
