I thought that was a shame, but IIRC didn't the actor kind of force their hand because his drug/alcohol issues were causing him to be really unreliable about showing up for work? IMO though, CSI jumped the shark with that awful Quentin Tarentino two-parter. Sweet Jesus that was awful.
