If they don't get the joke, sucks to be them. If you can't make a joke about a popular TV show online, where can you make it?

It is a funny scene.

How about, "Don't make rape jokes at all."

(Anonymous) 2017-09-22 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm, no.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-23 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
If the prevalent just-a-joke were castration, would you stick with your 'Hmmm, no.'?

(Anonymous) 2017-09-23 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yes.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-23 08:32 am (UTC)(link)
Is there anyone in the world who's not cool about castraton jokes?

(Anonymous) 2017-09-23 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
*raises hand*

Rape, castration, female genital mutilation, dick size, loose pussies. I'm a hardcore feminist and I don't like jokes about any of it that puts the joke on the person in question. GoT fandom can be hell.

Although I do think people can say what they want; I'll be stone-faced if I want.

God, Game of Thrones fandom really hasn't picked up on the fact that the show isn't saying castration jokes are a good idea yet, have they.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-23 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely bloody YES. You are an asshole.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-23 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Calm your tits, fun police

(Anonymous) 2017-09-22 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
How about, "Make jokes about everything, but if you around someone it bothers and they say so, apologize and don't do it again."

(Anonymous) 2017-09-22 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Why?

(Anonymous) 2017-09-23 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
The joke is at the expense of rapists. I thought it was a pretty brilliant satire of rapey bro culture that takes those tropes common in media and exposes them for how horrible they really are.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-23 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
But the problem - very obviously - is that those people also think the joke is funny and adopt it themselves. That's OP's whole point.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-23 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
But then you get into the area where we should never say anything because some idiot is going to take it wrong. Some idiot is always going to take it wrong, and you can't control that.

Kind of like the idiots who thought Blazing Saddles was funny because they kept using the n-word to refer to black people, not realizing it was making fun of stupid racists.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-23 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Idiots are going to misinterpret anything, but we can also talk about jokes being more or less easy to interpret in that way. And if a joke is really easy to reinterpret as being at the expense of victims, it's a problem with the joke. That is a major failure mode of jokes about sensitive topics.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-25 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, definitely. It's all about context and how you construct the joke. Simply going "x topic is off-limits as a joke!" doesn't help things, and neither does being irresponsible thinking you are just proving a point (or just being an asshole who thinks their rights are under attack, depending on some folks).

(Anonymous) 2017-09-22 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I say make all the jokes you want, but don't be upset if people think you're an unfunny asshat if the joke falls flat. That's the risk you take when making any joke, never mind rape jokes.
