The type of fic I enjoy seldom gets the serial-numbers-filed-off treatment, but the one time a fic I loved did, the story and characters had to be drastically changed to even make changing the names make sense. At which point it was really just original fiction by an author I liked. (Sadly, an author who has a tendency to not finish their work, but that's a whole 'nother problem.)

Which leads me to believe that what I enjoy is too specific to whatever canon to swap names, if that makes sense.
