Or when you go into a 1 chapter "completed" fic and then come to find out it was just a set-up for a story they never got around to actually writing. Oh the cruelty!

I also wish they had a "notify when marked complete" option for subsciptions. There's this author that writes great stories, but she updates once a week and they're like 1-2k 'chapters' that sometimes just stop in the middle of a scene. When it's all said and done the whole fic is good, but ugh those updates are painful.

PSA: AO3 will let you "orphan" a story, so it can be unassociated with you, if you desire to spin off a fanfic but leave it for people to read.

I sort of look at it differently, since a lot I read is smut, and even if unfinished, there might be a lot of juicy stuff in 15 chapters.

I would definitely read an unfinished fic, especially one with smut, but I'd like to know in advance that that's what I'm reading.

That's a fair point.

I write short one-shots, and I used to read mostly that too, until I discovered that AO3 lets me download things onto my Kindle. Sometimes I feel like I should look at the ending just to make sure there is one, but what if I don't want to know the ending?

You can download a pdf but if you have the Kindle specifically you can also download a .mobi file which is their standard format.

I'd say that, in the absence of an "Abandoned" status, an author mentioning at the end of a chapter that they've lost interest is the next clearest thing.

(then again, I've gone back years later and finished abandoned fics, so... )

Do you ever leave a comment saying that you'd love to see the ending? Sometimes that's all it might take.

I've kind of abandoned a fic, but if you go into my profile, that story is listed as "on hiatus ". I've lost interest in the fandom and I had only written out a few chapters. I feel bad too. people actually liked that fic.

There's a tag, "Abandoned Work - Unfinished and Discontinued," that you can use for that purpose. I've used it myself.

I've seen some people write something in the summary to the effect that the fic is no longer being updated so you'll see that as you scroll by.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-27 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I really appreciate that fact on ff.net that people put [HIATUS] or [ABANDONED] before the actual summary.

I really appreciate that.

When they put it in the summary and not just have after you've read, like, 35 chapters, a chapter that says they're no longer writing - that's better than just nothing, but I like knowing it going in. Abandoned, on hiatus, discontinued all work for me and sometimes I'll read them, even knowing, and I might feel disappointed that it won't be finished, but I won't be deeply (and, yes, sometimes bitterly) disappointed like I have been.

I only ever search with the "completed" box ticked

(Anonymous) 2017-09-27 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just not interested in WIPs.

Re: I only ever search with the "completed" box ticked

That's kind of the whole secret. That sometimes when people abandon WIPs they just mark them as complete to say they're done with them, not that the story is done.

Agree! 10000000x agree!
