I absolutely go bonkers when people are holding something they handwrote and say, "I can't read what I wrote."

WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU!?!?!?!

Does it matter how long ago they wrote it? If it's something they just wrote then yeah that's ridiculous, but if I try to read an older note I scribbled sometimes I can't. I have terrible, rushed handwriting.

I think either instance is pretty bad, tbh. There are only 26 letters. How hard is it to make all of them so you know what the heck you're supposed do or say?

Um.

I write grocery lists through the week and sometimes i just get in a hurry and then i'm looking at it at the store and....nope. No *fucking* clue what that says, is that a j or a p or a...what the hell?

It happens, especially more now since i tend to type much much more than i write longhand.

Why bother writing something down if you won't be able to read it later???

Habit? Hate putting stuff into my phone? A list for the grocery is on the side of the 'fridge so I or Monstrous Bebe can write on it whenever we want/think of something, and sometimes - it just gets messy.

Not like i'm going to abandon long-hand.

Uh, I have issues with my hands. Part of a learning disability thing. I actually can't make my handwriting better. It is mostly legible if I write very, very slowly. I usually don't have time to do that, though.

Well, obviously my pet peeve does not extend to people with disabilities.

Being rushed? Being tired? Never even having been taught any better? I can think of a few circumstances.

Lots of people write in cursive and have messy hand writing, especially when they're in a hurry. Cursive has extra loops and links, which makes it easy for, say, a loosely linked 'o' to look like an 'e', or a widely spaced 'n' to look like an 'u'. In my case, my quickly written 'k's (with a top loop) often look like 'b's or even 'h's. A hastily dotted 'i' can also confuse if it's hard to tell which vertical line is the 'i'. As well, most handwritten notes are probably going to be brief or bullet pointed (because if it's more important or there's more time it's going to get typed instead). Brief and bullet pointed means there are less context clues to use to work out what a word is - 'tissues' scribbled in a paragraph about someone crying can be easily guessed, 'tissues' scribbled in a list of random grocery items is harder.

But if someone has to handwrite regularly for work, then yeah, they probably should improve their handwriting (or buy a tablet).

I disagree. I think it takes miliseconds to take the time to write something you will be able to read later. If you can't read what you write, that is the point of writing something down at all?
