Ugh. Yes. It's amazing how many people seem to think employees have total control over what happens in retail stores.

When I worked at the bookstore here in town, we had one of those things that you could press to play little samples of music from various CDs that were advertised there. Most of the year it was your typical pop/jazz/oldies CDs, but obviously, around the holidays, we'd get shipments of holiday CDs to play in the store.

One year it took us a little longer than usual to swap out the Christmas music after the holidays ended (we're talking still hearing Christmas songs in early February here), because we had yet to get the new batch of pop/jazz/oldies CDs in to replace the holiday ones due to some sort of shipment delay/issue.

Cue customers constantly pointing out that hey, did we know we're still playing Christmas music nearly two months later (we can hear it all day at work, so...yes?), and us having to explain the delayed delivery of new CDs over and over. That was fun.

This is my first year at this place and I am dreading when they start piping in the Christmas music. I love my Christmas music but I think I'll be hating it soon. I do love how customers think they're being really insightful and helpful with obvious stuff though. I had a guy come up to me a few days ago and in a really earnest, concerned way whisper "I'm really sorry but I think you've been robbed." I asked why and he said "Well, all those big boxes of Lego and DVD's you have upstairs? They're all...empty!"

I stared for the longest time waiting for him to say he was joking but he looked genuinely horrified. I then spent the next ten minutes explaining that we use empty boxes for high-value stuff to prevent shoplifting. I thought that was common knowledge since basically every shop does it.

It took me a few years of being out of retail to stop hating Christmas. (But then, I had ten retail Christmases and was drafted into the War Against Christmas, aka Fox News viewers who had a new excuse to berate the person behind the registers.)
