So much this. I loved the first several Anita Blake books (I read them when I was in my 20s), but I stopped several years ago. She's just insufferable.

I did too! And then the ardeur happened. :(

UGH, that ruined everything. What little plot & characterization existed got tossed out the window (with everyone's clothes).

I've read the early Anita Blake books because people often say how good they are compared to the post-ardeur ones and they swear up and down that it was a great series. Honestly? The early books are just okay. They were one of the earlier examples of urban fantasy with a badass heroine just as that subgenre took off, and I think that's why the series got as much attention as they did. But I didn't find that particularly interesting and I thought the character and author took themselves a little too seriously.

I got through the first one with its asspull of an ending, tried the second on the assurance of a friend that they are really good, but gave up a couple of chapters in because I could not muster the fucks to continue.

Yeah, exactly. They were fun, unusual for the time, and had interesting mythos. They were something I would rec if someone was looking for urban fantasy, not something I would re-read a lot or write fic about.

I think if I were to read it for the first time NOW, I wouldn't be impressed. I doubt I'd get very far. You're 100% right on character & author taking themselves too seriously.
