What happened in S12?

A whole lot of not-very-interesting. There are about two episodes in that whole mess that I've even bothered rewatching.

Basically, Sam and Dean ended up being side characters in their own show. There was Angel Drama, Demon Drama, British Men of Letters Drama, but Winchester Drama was pretty thin on the ground. For the most part, they could have been coworkers instead of brothers.

Also, they apparently decided to set a new record in the number of recurring female characters who were unceremoniously bumped off. Generally by Buckleming.

All nuance and shades of grey went out the window. The Brits are over-the-top, mustache-twirling villains who use phrases like "mangy colonials" and kill their children Battle Royale-style.

The American hunters are ~merciful~ and don't want to kill all monsters.

Except for Dean. Dean's a killer. Who has bad hygiene and acts like a douche 100% of the time.

(And Mary, who is a psychopath.)

There is one (1) awesome episode (12x18, The Memory Remains) and a few okay ones but the rest of the season is pure shit. I cringed watching some of the dialogue scenes.
