I had a networking event where my anxiety decided to kick in and I sounded like a nervous chipmunk in front of every important person I had to talk too. I knew I was giving a very poor first impression, but the harder I tried to control it, the worse I sounded and I spent the last hour at the event just smiling and wishing I could hole up in the bathroom. Today, I had to talk to my boss about it and, while she was very nice about the whole thing, she did say that my squeakiness was going to get me locked out of advancing my position and I needed to work on presenting a more confident persona.
