104 As others have said, I'm not sure it matters why you do it all that much, so long as you don't end up being a martyr about it. Sometimes we start down the right road for the wrong reasons, and then doing things for others just becomes a habit of mind.

141 I really feel that fandom is about 95% about selfish people taking the "doers" of fandom for granted, which is unfortunate but true. Try not offering any further doodles to those who have dissed you, or, just think of the doodles as what you are doing for yourself. As people to give you tons and tons of prompts and pick and choose without thinking that you're taking a kind of commission. That might make you feel better about it! I'm all about getting as much of the ability to be satisfied into your own hands and out of other people's hands as possible.

150 I feel you, but if that happens, especially at this point, the fault is entirely his. However, it's so much less likely now that he's older. And I'm rooting for him too!

159 You know, I continue to not understand why a lot of people talking about a thing makes other people hate that thing. If I already like a thing, then I continue to like it, and if the masses talk about things that aren't the things I like about it, I try to talk about the things I like. If I dislike a thing, I just scroll past. If I am indifferent about a thing, I continue to be indifferent. Why others get so negative about people being positive continues to baffle me.

167 Wow, that is hard core. I really hope making that secret was cathartic for you! I will say that there is a lot of worship of brilliant misanthropes in fandom in general (House, Snape, McKay, Grissom) and in real life they are actually an enormous amount of work to be friends with because they demand a lot of understanding and give almost none in return.

169 I wish you could say that to every person who comments on stories I write that aren't NC17 with essentially "this is nice but next time can there be porn?" Sex sells in fandom just as much as it does in the marketplace, and if I just went by what gets me comments and attention I'd write nothing but 1000 word PWP ship fics. Right now I'm writing a multichapter ensemble story and I'm worried that once it gets posted no one will want to stick around through the actual talking and emotion to get to the sex. Sometimes it can be frustrating! So if you want more love and less sex, comment tons on the PG stories you see.

Yes, exactly, thank you! This is everything I wanted to say. LOL The last thing I want to hear as a reply to a story where I just sent my characters on a date is... "I like this, but could you write a sequel with lemon or lime? Not that I'm complaining or anything..." Or something to that effect.

That and romance seems to be really hard to find in fandom in general. I don't think a lot of people know what it actually is, the media doesn't help either. Most 'romance' novels go straight to the sex too.

I'd love for the definition of "romance novel" to be changed to Jane Austen-type stuff. I think when I first heard the term, I thought it was.

true he's culpable for his own mistakes. it just feels like a gray area. the fame machine is so much more relentless these days, there's a difference between being a household name and the kind of mega-fame that leads to 100x more leeches and 10x more security. addiction is not something that just goes away magically. it has to be managed every single day. like, am i playing a small part in leading an alcoholic to happy hour here?

from all indications he's happiest with a quiet life. but that isn't stopping him from lapping up the juiciest gigs. so i worry.

tl;dr seeing Iron Man once is not enough. his situation is just making me uncomfortable about actively campaigning for I.M. memes and parties, even though that would be fun and kick up some good buzz.

maybe i'll get over it. or someone else can pick it up.

I'm not a writer, myself, but I HATE it when I see a story I know someone's worked hard on and someone says, "durr, it wuz gud but y no pron?" Often a fic without porn can be more powerful, at least IMHO. I'm a fanartist, and I happen to like a certain pairing that's been turned into WHOA HARDCORE BSDM BLOODY NONSTOP SEX, and I post G and PG art. I... don't get too many comments. :P

I totally know how you feel. I'm working on a long romance fairly plot-driven WIP, and when I announced at some point that there would be no smut I was afraid I'd lose everybody.
happily, though, I do have a bunch of dedicated readers who seem to be enjoying the plot. so maybe not everybody loses interest the moment there's no sex?
