The Fifth Head of Cerberus is pretty straightforward for Wolfe tbh

I don't generally read Wolfe's novels but I've read a lot of his short stories and I agree with you. That said "pretty straightforward for Wolfe" doesn't mean it's always clear what's going on. (I love that particular story though.)

Do you know why the guy who's investigating throws out the recording at the end? I never figured out his motivation.

I read it a really long time ago, so I'm not really sure. I remember being impressed and confused at the same time but I only remember some of the details.

I haven't read it in a while, and I don't have a copy to hand so I can't provide a detailed reading (if you could quote the relevant text I would actually deeply appreciate it).

But it seems to me that, in general, the basic situation of 5th Head is that you have a colonial structure which relies on ignoring and papering over the profound ambiguities and uncertainties of identity and being which lie in the background.
