Re: Inspired by 7 - What types of book endings make you furious?

I don't think there's one book ending that necessarily makes me mad - any ending, from Rocks Fall Everyone Dies to Happily Married with Babies to Shocking Twist all CAN work. Every ending, if you strip it down of the details, is a cliche, so it either works for the story or it doesn't.

That being said, I do feel endings have to be thematically predictable. As in, they should fit in with the theme of the story. Twist endings or sudden surprises generally should somehow have some hints - doesn't have to be hints you catch the first read-through, but if you go read it again, maybe bits and pieces you catch.

But I generally don't like endings where everything is wrapped up neatly with a bow. I also don't like epilogues where they are Married with Kids if the romance in question is with kids or young teens, because it usually feels cheesy and unrealistic that two twelve year olds who held hands in the story never dated anyone else. Plus, I think epilogues are generally unnecessary unless there are unanswered questions or a glimpse into the future is absolutely necessary.
