Same, OP. So much smut reads like it could be about any characters in any fandom with a few minor changes. It's obviously harder to write, but I prefer it when characters are, well, IN CHARACTER.

I think that's true in most fandoms if the ship isn't canon or if the canon orientations don't mesh.

(I like the challenge of keeping the characters IC while still getting them to do what I want them to do (which can include boning) but I think it's just too much work for most people.

Agreed. This is a shame because seeing how two characters who aren't together in canon come together in a way that's believable is part of my enjoyment, really. But most writers don't want to put the effort in, and most readers don't care.

I thought it was the other way around with Jared and Jensen! Oh well, it's such a huge and sprawling fandom that both versions are probably definite 100% characterisation in some corner.

(And I agree, it's boring!)

Yes, it can't be different opinions or clunky executions. You are the only intellectual who knows how the characters really are.
