I don't know anything about Overwatch, and I'm also very far from being an expert on anything else, but I believe "true self is without form" is pretty close to being a classically Buddhist idea, so that might be worth investigating.

Their religion is basically Buddhism. They even dress like monks. They are even based in Nepal, which is near Tibet.

You can follow a philosophy without it being a religion.

Yup; religion is like a philosophy handed down by a supreme being. Just ignore notions that it came from 'outside' and follow it yourself as a personal tenet. Lots of religions have really good ideas (that many of the followers don't always adhere to...) that are designed to make you a better person, so there's no need to feel guilty about wanting to better yourself IMHO.

Like others have said, this sounds like Buddhism. I wouldn't call it a religion but I think this is a good quote on it:

"Buddhism doesn't fit neatly into either category of religion or philosophy. When people asked Buddha what he was teaching, he said he teaches "the way things are." He said nobody should believe his teachings out of faith, but instead they should examine for themselves to see if they are true or not."

I'm catholic (sorta) but practice a bit of Buddhism to relieve some stress. It's nice and you start noticing some influences of Buddhism into other things.

I haven't played the game but his dress and that saying is derivative of Buddhism. Buddhism isn't a religion, it's seeking full and permanent understanding of the three fundamental truths of reality: No true self, impermanence, and suffering. It only became a religion after the historical Buddha died and sects began twisting things around to suit them or their agenda. It's not to say that Buddhists can't believe in gods, but true Buddhism is not directly interested in such things. I've been a practicing Buddhist for half a decade now if you're interested in learning more.

Uh, if the phrases speak to you on a deeper level, why would it matter if the dudes or gals having invented them are white, purple or neon green? Why are you even thinking that? Trying to think a bit deeper sounds like a worthwhile endeavor for you, that's for sure.

OP

I don't know a lot about religion aside from Orthodox Chistianity so I really couldn't tell if that were refrences to any other religion or just a pseudo-esotheric stuff someone came up with to make the character look deep. I'm relieved it's actually based on something real I can research, but before reading the replies it felt like liking a deep quote from one of those motivational posters... in other words, I felt silly about it, no offence to white dudes intended.

I never expected such kind replies, thank you! I feel a lot better now, still a bit silly for not getting all the Buddhism refrences. I know nothing about it though, I guess I'm going to learn more about it from now on! :)
