It's pronounced yao-ee. Yao rhymes with mao.

It's actually pronounced Yah-o-ee. With three separate syllables.

When I say it like that in my head, it sounds fine. But out loud... irk. Let's just say I won't be pronouncing it out loud to my friends any time soon..

It's a pretty odd word in general. 'Slash' and Boy-love' works just fine ~_^ Besides, Boy Love is all encompassing, while Yaoi is just the smut side of things!

I kind of think of it as something different to slash - isn't it generally used for anime/manga rather than film or TV pairings? And true, BL works just as well ~~but isn't the smut side of things the most fun? hehe~~

Generally. Slash is mostly used for Western Fandom thanks to Star Trek! ^_^

Makes differentiating it easier, I guess. Back to yaoi-ing/shounen-ai-ing/BL-ing in anime and manga and slashing in TV/film.. lol.

But I am actually kinda glad I know how to say "yaoi" now, cos I really wasn't sure and it's been annoying me recently...

I was a little confused for a while, because I always pronounced it Yah-o-ee, and then when I went to my first convention, I hear Yowie, and I was SO confused xD But then I discussed it with a friend who hails from Japan and she said it was indeed- Yah-O-ee.

So hopefully she didn't lie to me! xD

A Japanese person probably has the pronounciation right, rather than {American?} fans! It looks and sounds more right too, anyway XD I'm going to stick with it (saying it my head only, of course lol)

Well good for you! Hopefully I didn't stray you wrong with the pronunciation, and if I did and someone calls you on it with a lot of proof, when tell them some lame-o on LJ told you this xD

It'll probably never happen (it's lame when none of your RL friends are into anime/manga - and even if they were, they'd still keep clear of yaoi lol) but cool stuff, I have someone to blame :p (but I'm sure you aren't wrong XD)

It's because when you say it correctly, it shouldn't sound like that, it should sound yao-ee.

If you say it like "yao-ee", how do you pronounce the "yao" part?

Like yow... others have been saying I've been saying it wrong, but no one's corrected my pronunciation IRL.

Even the Japanese combine sounds together to get new sounds. When saying it quickly, it shouldn't sound like that plus pronouncing it that way is awkward.

According to numerous sources on the internt, alongside my friend who is from Japan and lived there for sixteen years of her life, all of them say it's pronounced Yah-o-ee. It doesn't have to sound awkward.
