Mello doesn't hate Near (^^; They're rivals. He said himself that they don't get along. If he really hated Near, he would've shot him when he had the chance, ne?

Or the fact Hal dived in the way and talked him out of it by pointing out that if Mello killed Near they'd have to kill him.

Mello's rash and impulsive (^^;. If he really hated Near, he would've shot him, despite Hal wanting to stop him (-o-).

Not rally, I think Hal's interruption reminded him of the fact Mello had yet to beat Near. I think Mello would want to prove himself the superior beforehand, the action was rash but I believe the sentiment behind it was real. Mello wouldn't want Near to die without Mello having proved himself the better out of the two of them.
But in that moment, given that he hadn't yet 'won', if he'd killed Near he probably would have regretted it. It would have been a hollow victory.

The whole point I'm trying to make here is MN could never be a happy/perfect couple, they'd destroy each other. The only way it could ever happen was in hate!sex or a display of power kind of thing.

That's a good point, but it still proves mine. That is, Mello doesn't hate Near (^^a; They're just rivals, ne?

I don't agree ( ' v ' ) MeroNia would work perfectly together. Mello would have the physical dominance while Near has the mental one. But it's pointless to argue with MM shippers, ne? (^^a;
