But doesn't it make it hard for other people to know what you're talking about that way? I mean, if they can't recognise the word since it's so mispronounced, misunderstandings can easily occur (it happened to me once, to the embarrassing confusion of both of us).

I rarely talk to people IRL about yaoi anyway. And most people that I know pronounce manga incorrectly like that. (Saying it correctly sounds pretentious. We are in America, we Americanize the way everything is pronounced. If we can do it with French, why not Japanese? And seriously, when was the last time you ever heard anyone pronounce a French word or name correctly?)

But yeah, "yaoi" is not really a word you often have the need to pronounce correctly, heh.

And seriously, when was the last time you ever heard anyone pronounce a French word or name correctly?

Well, people here do tend to try? The "r"'s are a bit tricky for those who didn't take it in school, though.

Also, being a nation completely obsessed with football (not the American kind), people who are unable to at least try to pronounce foreign names will be gently teased about it. Though most foreign words come from English these days.
