Re: Self-indulgent incoherent and probably mildly offensive rambling about Star Wars ships and race
(Anonymous) 2017-10-06 01:35 am (UTC)(link)I think the real life "racial identity" of the actor should inform the characterization, not define it. It's silly to pretend the people producing and consuming media aren't going to hear Cassian's accent and associate it with certain things, so it's better to consider those things while writing (Unfortunately 2D characterization is kind of par for the course in fanfic, which I'm guessing is where the walking stereotype problem comes in)
Re: Self-indulgent incoherent and probably mildly offensive rambling about Star Wars ships and race
(Anonymous) 2017-10-06 02:23 am (UTC)(link)That's a good point.
And I think that's probably where the discomfort comes from, too, because it's not done well a lot of the time, and comes across as really reductive.
Re: Self-indulgent incoherent and probably mildly offensive rambling about Star Wars ships and race
(Anonymous) 2017-10-06 02:51 am (UTC)(link)another thing your post made me think about is how "racial identity" isn't the most useful language to talk about a franchise with so many actors from non-US countries. Though I don't know if that matters in the kind of conversations you're reading (and yes, I think you might be a masochist heh).
I've read your other responses and I am blow anyway that anyone would say Jyn is too racist to ship with Cassian based on the ~two day character arc of the movie. Criticize the writers, maybe, but the character??
