(Anonymous) 2017-10-06 04:02 am (UTC)(link)There is a reason why practically no black person in the USA can trust that any cop is doing their best. One of them is because the "blue wall" is so racist in its fundamental construction that no black *police officer* can trust that they will access the same level of utter immunity from consequences that white cops do. So if the black cops can't even count on being treated well, what should black "civilians"* expect?
When every aspect of the inner and outer culture police officers experience is telling them that if they're white, nothing they do will be considered wrong...
Well, even your "just average" folks are gonna find it more than a little tempting to bend one rule, then two, then three...
---
* Also, the use of "civilian" by police officers is a very worrisome aspect of the insularity of police culture because it reflects a pale mirror of the same phenomenon in the military, and is a consequence of the paramilitarization of the police forces.

(Anonymous) 2017-10-06 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)I don't disagree with your assessment, and I don't believe I wrote anything contradicts it.
Policing society is an extreme microcosm of society in general where issues like racism and corruption are magnified to some degree because of the amount of power police hold. That degree of magnification is going to vary based on regional cultural values, but racism especially will always be there as long as it's there in our culture and society.
I still do believe that the majority of cops are doing their best. But I don't think that for many of these cops, their best is anywhere near good enough. That's what we have to both recognize and demand: a change in perception of law enforcement officers about their role in society and the devastating effect of institutional racism in the crj system.
Even if we dismantle the whole current law enforcement system, from local to federal, anything we tried to replace it with is still going to have the same issues with racism because it's a societal problem. And that's something really big and really hard to fix. But I'm doing what I can and expecting the same of those in my life to do what THEY can to change it.
